DALLAS, Texas — The Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to the shooting of a transgender woman in Dallas, Texas last Friday. According to reports, a transgender woman was seriously wounded after she was shot several times by a man driving alongside her after he yelled slurs about her gender identity. Police are investigating the attack as a hate crime.
“I am heartbroken that yet another transgender woman has been victimized with a gun in Dallas,” said Hilary Whitfield, a volunteer with the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “As Texans, we won’t stand for the epidemic of violence against the transgender community that is plaguing our state and our country. No one should live with the fear of gun violence for being who they are. We are committed to fighting for the rights and safety of our transgender neighbors.”
There have been at least three instances of violence against transgender women in Dallas this year, with at least two trans women killed or injured with a gun. The state of Texas’ hate crime law does not include protections for gender identity.
