Washington, D.C. Moms Demand Action, Everytown Statement on Two Shootings in the District

September 20, 2019

Reports Indicate Two People Were Shot and Killed and Seven Were Shot and Wounded in Two Shootings Thursday Night

WASHINGTON – The Washington, D.C. chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement after reports of two shootings in the District. Reports indicate that one person was shot and killed and two others were wounded in a shooting in Northeast D.C. In a separate shooting in Northwest D.C., reports indicate that one person was shot and killed and five others were wounded.

“We shouldn’t have to live like this,” said Rachel Usdan, volunteer leader with the Washington, D.C. chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “My heart breaks for the families and communities devastated by gun violence overnight. These are deadly reminders that we must do more to stop gun violence in the District.”

Research indicates that gun homicides and assaults are disproportionately concentrated in cities, and D.C. has one of the highest rates of gun homicides in the country. In D.C., volunteers with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America are advocating alongside their local partners for increased funding for community-based intervention programs, including the D.C. Office of Neighborhood Safety and Cure the Streets.
