One Million Moms for Gun Control gets a (name) makeover

STAMFORD — Barely two months old, the grassroots group One Million Moms for Gun Control is already re-branding.

The organization will now be called “Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America,” founder Shannon Watts announced in a news release Wednesday. The renaming is an effort to better define the group’s mission, which is to lobby legislators for stronger gun laws, and to reduce confusion with “similarly named organizations.”

“We are heartened by how quickly we’ve grown and how central we have become to ‘gun sense’ efforts in America,” Watts said in a statement. “Like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, our mission is to motivate and mobilize moms to encourage their legislators to support common-sense legislation. Our new name and the term ‘gun sense’ reinforces that there is a middle ground on solutions to the epidemic of gun violence in America.”

Kara Nelson Baekey, founder of Moms Demand Action’s Fairfield County chapter, will attend Thursday’s panel on gun violence at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury as a guest of U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. The conference, which will focus on the federal response to gun violence, will feature remarks by Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.
