MISSOULA – In the aftermath of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden laid out a comprehensive plan to curb gun violence in the U.S., including stricter gun laws.

Nancy-De-Pastino-3The proposal is dividing people across the nation and right here in Montana.

Currently, you do not need a permit to buy a gun in Montana, and you don’t have to register or license it. However, you do need a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Licensed gun dealers have to do background checks on anyone who wants to buy a gun. Private sales are a different story.
People who buy or trade guns between themselves do not have to do background checks on any buyers.

Obama’s gun control proposals include universal background checks for all gun sales, the reinstatement of a 2004 assault weapon ban, and limiting ammunition magazines to ten rounds.

The right to bear arms and a family’s right to feel safe in their own community are pulling some Montanans in opposite directions.

“Montana people are very concerned about changes that might be coming down the pipe from Washington, D.C.,” said Gary Marbut, President of the Montana Shooting Sports Association.
