Despite Polling Showing Wide Opposition, Governor Burgum Signs House Bill 1169, Making it Easy for Dangerous People and People with No Firearms Safety Training to Carry Hidden, Loaded Handguns Throughout North Dakota

Former Republican Governor Ed Schafer Urged Governor Burgum to Veto This Dangerous Legislation

BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement after Governor Burgum signed HB 1169, a bill that allows dangerous people and people with no firearms safety training to carry hidden, loaded handguns throughout the state. More information about the bill is available here.

Polling released last week showed 85 percent of North Dakotans, including 78 percent of gun owners, support the state’s permit requirement for carrying concealed handguns in public.

STATEMENT FROM CATHY LEE, VOLUNTEER WITH NORTH DAKOTA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“As one of many North Dakotans opposed to this legislation, I’m extremely disappointed in our elected leaders who listened to the gun lobby over their constituents. As a concerned mom, angered by this careless decision, I will continue to fight for the safety of my community. I urge those who are just as angry to join us. We will not be silent while our legislators gamble with our safety.”
