Maine Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Legislators for Bipartisan Recommendation Against Bill That Would Allow Teenagers to Carry Hidden, Loaded Weapons Without a Permit or Safety Training

March 24, 2017

By a 9-1 Margin, Joint Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee Members Issued a Recommendation Against Passing Legislative Document 44

AUGUSTA, Maine –The Maine chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, praised state legislators for recommending that Legislative Document 44 ought not to pass out of committee this morning in Augusta. The bill would allow teenagers to carry hidden, loaded guns in public without a permit or safety training by lowering the age requirement for permitless carry from 21-years-old to 18-years-old. Maine Moms Demand Action volunteers have been urging legislators to reject LD 44 this legislative session.

STATEMENT FROM KATHLEEN MCFADDEN, VOLUNTEER WITH THE MAINE CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“I am thankful that bipartisan members of the Joint Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee recommended that Legislative Document 44 ought not to pass out of committee. The idea of allowing teenagers to carry hidden, loaded weapons in public without safety training or a permit simply makes no sense. That’s why in recent weeks, medical professionals, social workers and the law enforcement community have all expressed their opposition to this bill. I’m encouraged that our legislators have now done the same and urge them to continue this progress by rejecting this dangerous legislation when it comes to a floor vote.”
