April 12, 2017

House Bill 630 Would Allow People to Carry Hidden, Loaded Handguns in Missouri Schools, College and University Facilities and Bars, Along with Daycare Centers, Sports Arenas and Police Stations

Moms Demand Action Volunteers Testified Against HB 630 Yesterday

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Volunteers with the Missouri Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today criticized lawmakers in the General Laws Committee of Missouri House of Representatives for passing House Bill 630, a bill that would change Missouri law to allow people to carry hidden, loaded handguns in Missouri schools, college and university facilities and bars, along with daycare centers, sports arenas and police stations. More information about the bill is available here.

During yesterday’s hearing, Missouri Moms Demand Action volunteers filled the room and joined the overwhelming opposition, including representatives from Missouri universities, community colleges, campus law enforcement and professional sports teams.

STATEMENT FROM WILLIAM WARREN, COLLEGE EDUCATOR AND VOLUNTEER WITH THE MISSOURI CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“As an educator in Missouri, I know that ‘guns everywhere’ is not the answer. If this bill becomes law, students will have to wonder whether the student, professor or visitor walking next to them on campus is carrying a hidden, loaded handgun. This legislation does not have the safety of our colleges and universities in mind. I urge our leaders to stand with educators like me and reject this dangerous bill.”

STATEMENT FROM BECKY MORGAN, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE MISSOURI CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“The House General Laws Committee’s vote today is disheartening. Just a day ago, a school shooting in California reminded us how high the stakes are when people bring guns into schools. Allowing hidden, loaded handguns in some of our most sensitive places, including schools, is dangerous. Our elected leaders should listen to their constituents and put the safety of their constituents first – rather than doing the bidding of the gun lobby.”
