Moms Demand Action Volunteers Fought Tirelessly Throughout the Legislative Session to Make Sure Neither SB7 Nor HB249 Became State Law
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Volunteers with the Kentucky chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, applauded the defeat of dangerous legislation that would have abolished longstanding permitting requirements, SB7, and allowed guns on college campuses and into K-12 schools, HB249. The bills expired when the Legislature adjourned late Thursday evening. The Kentucky chapter of Moms Demand Action worked relentlessly for the entire legislative session to urge lawmakers not to pass bills that would threaten public safety.
Volunteers with the chapter drove thousands of digital messages and calls to state lawmakers, placed numerous letters-to-the-editor in newspapers throughout the Commonwealth and took part in a well-attended Advocacy Day in Frankfort last month. They also worked closely with members of the state’s education and law enforcement communities and other coalition partners to form a united front against these dangerous policies.
STATEMENT FROM CONNIE COARTNEY, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE KENTUCKY CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Common sense prevailed last night in the Bluegrass State. It is incredibly encouraging that state legislators decided not to force guns onto our campuses and into our schools or to overturn longstanding permitting requirements. It’s reassuring to know that state leaders heeded the concerns of their constituents and chose not to move forward with such reckless legislation. Our permitting system is strong and should remain that way. There was never any good reason to abolish those standards and let dangerous people carry hidden, loaded weapons in public without a permit or safety training. Likewise, students should not have to fear for their safety when on campus at any of Kentucky’s great public universities or K-12 schools. Moms Demand Action volunteers throughout the Commonwealth should take great pride in knowing that we have fought back bills that would have endangered public safety and done our part to make our streets and our campuses safer.”
