Shooting Came The Same Day as a Mass Shooting in Brooklyn and an Attack During a Wedding at a New Hampshire Church That Left At Least Two People Wounded
CHICAGO — The Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement after a shooting on Chicago’s Northwest Side on Saturday night left four people dead and another critically wounded. According to news reports, the four people were eating dinner when the shooter entered the apartment and opened fire. The shooting was the second mass shooting Saturday, after a morning shooting in Brooklyn left four people dead and three others wounded.
“We woke up yesterday to news of a horrific mass shooting in Brooklyn, and last night, we learned of another here in Chicago,” said Valerie Burgest, a volunteer with the Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “This time, it was people trying to enjoy dinner in their home. It shouldn’t be this way. We’re thinking of everyone affected by last night’s tragedy and all of this weekend’s shootings across the city, and we’re more committed than ever to fighting for a safer future.”
The shooting was one of several this weekend in Chicago: Since Friday evening, at least one other person has been fatally shot in the city and at least 11 others have been wounded, according to new reports.
Research by Everytown for Gun Safety shows that the shooting in Chicago’s Dunning neighborhood was at least the 245th mass shooting this year. Everytown defines mass shootings as those in which four or more people are shot and killed, excluding the shooter.
Every day in the U.S. on average, 100 Americans are killed with guns, and hundreds more are shot and wounded.
