Earlier this week, Jersey City was shattered by gun violence — fueled by hate and armed with a gun. Tomorrow will mark seven years since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook School, where 20 students and six educators were shot and killed. And throughout the year, a year that included mass shooting tragedies and countless moments of daily gun violence that never made the headlines, Americans made a simple demand of their political leaders: Protect us or we will replace you.
Nowhere was that message sent louder or clearer than in Virginia, where voters flipped both chambers into a Gun Sense Majority. But Virginia was just the latest example of a seismic shift in the political and cultural landscape around gun safety — it came in Congress, in statehouses, in boardrooms, in courtrooms, in school board meetings and more. Put simply: The gun safety movement has never been stronger and the NRA has never been weaker.
There’s no question that 2020 will be the most pivotal year in the history of the gun safety movement. As the year comes to a close, take a moment to learn about what happened in gun safety in 2019 and what’s ahead by reading Everytown’s 2019 Year in Review.
