Florida Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond After Gun Rights Group Files Lawsuit Against Florida Department of Law Enforcement

May 14, 2019

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded after Florida Carry, a gun rights organization, filed a lawsuit against the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

“A background check only works if law enforcement can complete it,” said Gay Valimont, volunteer leader with Florida chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “After the shooting at Parkland last year, we decided as a state that law enforcement must be given the time they need to make sure that happens. I am grateful that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is acting to implement the landmark legislation we worked so hard to support last year.”

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act closed what is commonly known as the Charleston Loophole by extending the statewide waiting period for handgun purchases to cover all firearms and to require that the waiting period last the longer of three days or until a background check is complete.
