California Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action Respond to Shooting in Oakland

January 24, 2023

The California chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots networks, released the following statement in response to a shooting at Oakland gas station Monday night. According to reports, one individual was shot and killed and eight more were shot and wounded while filming a music video. This report comes on the heels of the deadly mass shootings in Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park, CA. The shooting in Monterey Park was the deadliest since the tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas last year and the deadliest ever in Los Angeles.

“Our hearts break for those affected in yesterday’s tragic shooting in Oakland,” said Lisa Henry, a volunteer with the California chapter of Moms Demand Action. “It has been a devastating last few days for Californians, and our communities have had enough. We can’t allow this reality of near daily reports of gun violence to perpetuate. We need systemic change and bold action at every level — including to hold those in the gun industry accountable for their role in our gun violence crisis.”

Additionally, this legislative session, lawmakers must prioritize securing long term, sustainable funding for Community Violence Intervention programs. These community-led programs have been shown to reduce gunshot woundings and deaths in the neighborhoods most impacted by gun violence.
