Everytown, Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action Statement on Half Moon Bay Mass Shooting

January 24, 2023

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — The California chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety grassroots networks, released the following statement on the mass shooting in Half Moon Bay, California in which at least seven people were reportedly shot and killed, and one more was critically wounded.

According to reports, the mass shooting took place at two separate farm nurseries near Highway 92. A suspect was taken into custody according to law enforcement officials. It’s also been reported that all of the victims in Half Moon Bay were of Chinese descent, once again compounding the fear, grief and trauma for the broader Asian American and Pacific Islander community nationwide, which was already experiencing an increase in hatred and violence. This is the sixth mass shooting so far this year where four or more people were killed, not including the shooter. This comes on the heels of the deadly mass shooting this weekend in Monterey Park, California where eleven people were killed and nine more were wounded. The shooting in Monterey Park was the deadliest since the tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas last year and the deadliest ever in Los Angeles.

“Our hearts are breaking for the community and those impacted by this tragedy,” said Rudy Espinoza, a volunteer with the California chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Yesterday we woke up to the horrible news coming out of Monterey Park, and tonight we will go to sleep with another mass tragedy, this time in Half Moon Bay. We can’t accept having loved ones taken like this. Today is just another painful reminder that we have more work to do.”

While we still have more to learn about the tragedies in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay, it’s impossible to deny how both have been made deadlier by a gun industry that has only made its products more dangerous over the years — highlighting the need for gun industry accountability at the national level.
