Washington Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Fatal Shooting at Freeman High School

September 13, 2017

Incident is at least 31st School Shooting of 2017, 239th Since January 2013

ROCKFORD, Wash. – The Washington chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement regarding the fatal shooting at Freeman High School. While information is still coming out, initial reports indicate that one student was shot and killed, and at least three more people were shot and injured. One person is in custody.

Everytown research shows that this is at least the 31th school shooting nationwide this year, and the 239th school shooting nationwide since January 2013. It is also the second school shooting in less than 24 hours, following yesterday’s shooting at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

STATEMENT FROM LAURA LATTA, VOLUNTEER WITH THE WASHINGTON CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Today’s shooting at Freeman High School – the second school shooting this country has seen in just 24 hours – is every parent’s worst nightmare. No parent should have to worry if their child is safe from gun violence while they are at school. Schools are places for kids to learn math and science, not how to duck and cover. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. Today’s tragic news reminds us that we cannot stand complacent while families are left with an empty chair at their table because of gun violence. I urge our elected officials to do more to address gun violence and help save lives.”
