Texas Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Fatal Shooting at West Freeway Church of Christ

December 29, 2019

WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas — The Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and Students Demand Action, both parts of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement in response to today’s fatal shooting at the West Freeway Church of Christ.

“This isn’t normal, and it’s not acceptable,” said Hilary Rand, volunteer chapter leader with the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “People should be able to go to Sunday church services without having to duck for cover.  We’re thinking of each of the families affected by today’s shooting, and we’re more committed than ever to working for the safer future Texans deserve.”

“As a Christian, seeing gun violence in a church just days after Christmas is particularly devastating,” said Ade Osadolor-Hernandez, a volunteer with the Southlake, Texas chapter of Students Demand Action. “Whether it’s a church or a music video set, we must do more to stop senseless shootings in Texas and across the country. The time to act has come and gone — again and again — while Texans continue to die.”

The shooting came after a Friday night shooting during a music video filming in Harris County left two people dead and another seven wounded. More information about the toll of gun violence in Texas is available here.

Texas lawmakers rolled back public safety laws during the 2019 legislative session. Despite numerous high-profile shootings, state lawmakers in recent years have failed to pass or even consider legislation requiring background checks on all gun sales or red flag legislation.

Every day in the U.S. on average, 100 people are killed with guns and hundreds more are wounded.
