Retiring Florida Republican Congressman with A Rating from NRA: NRA Refuses to Compromise on “Reasonable” Gun Laws

June 1, 2018

In case you missed it, Rep. Tom Rooney (R-FL) criticized the NRA for refusing to accept “reasonable” gun safety regulations in an interview published Wednesday. The retiring Republican congressman has an “A” rating from the NRA and has received $10,500 from the group, according to OpenSecrets.

Sarasota Magazine reported:

“Even though Rooney is a gun owner and supporter of the Second Amendment, he says that even proposing ‘reasonable’ regulations such as raising the age to buy assault rifles to 21 is condemned by the NRA. ‘The problem is with the political arm of the NRA,’ he says. ‘I don’t know in the last 10 years whether there has been any compromise with guns by the NRA.’”

Rep. Tom Rooney’s statement is just the latest proof point that the NRA’s extreme agenda is out of sync with the rest of the country. Polling by NBC/Wall Street Journal found the NRA’s favorability ratings underwater for the first time since before 2000.
