Wisconsin Moms Demand Action, Everytown Statement on Mass Shooting in Northern Wisconsin That Killed Four People

March 23, 2017

Victims Include an Everest Metro Police Officer, Believed to Be the First Officer Killed in the Line of Duty in Wisconsin This Year

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to Wednesday’s shootings that killed an Everest Metro police officer and three other people.

Authorities are still investigating yesterday’s shootings, but early reports suggest a domestic dispute may have been a factor. More information about the deadly relationship between domestic violence and gun violence is available here.

Across the country, more than 90 people are killed each day with guns and hundreds more are injured, on average. Most mass shootings in the U.S. are related to domestic or family violence: Analysis by Everytown for Gun Safety has shown that in more than half of all mass shootings in recent years, the perpetrator shot an intimate partner or family member. States that require background checks for all handgun sales see 47 percent fewer women shot to death by intimate partners and 53 percent fewer law enforcement officers shot and killed in the line of duty. Wisconsin is not one of these states.

STATEMENT FROM CHRIS KRASOVICH, VOLUNTEER WITH THE WISCONSIN CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Our thoughts are with each of the families affected by this tragedy. It is painfully clear we need to do more to prevent gun violence, and that grief and anger by themselves are not enough. It’s long past time for all of our leaders in Madison to protect our communities by taking concrete steps to close dangerous gaps in our gun laws.”
