Moms Demand Action Volunteers Drove Digital Actions, Met With Lawmakers throughout Session to Make Sure Several Dangerous Gun Bills Did Not Become Law
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Volunteers with the West Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded the defeat of several dangerous pieces of gun legislation that would have allowed guns in employer parking lots (HB 2562), on college campuses (HB 2713) and in K-12 classrooms (HB 2714). The bills expired when the Legislature adjourned at midnight Saturday. The West Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action worked throughout the legislative session to urge lawmakers not to move forward with these dangerous bills.
Volunteers with the chapter drove hundreds of digital messages to state lawmakers, took part in an advocacy day event in Charleston in February and returned to the statehouse on other occasions to meet with legislators as well.
STATEMENT FROM DIANE PENDLETON, VOLUNTEER WITH THE WEST VIRGINIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“West Virginia has a long tradition of responsible gun ownership but that doesn’t mean we need to be reckless and push ‘guns everywhere, for anyone with no questions asked’ policies. Last night, state legislators did the right thing by not moving forward with several particularly dangerous gun bills. I am pleased that our elected officials have allowed common sense and public safety to win the day by not forcing guns into our schools and onto our college campuses. Volunteers with the West Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action should take stock of our accomplishments and be proud. We will continue to make sure we are doing everything possible to keep West Virginians safe from gun violence.”
