WASHINGTON — Today, Everytown for Gun Safety and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, held a rally outside the U.S. Capitol, joined by lawmakers, gun violence survivors, members of partner gun violence prevention organizations, and over 1,000 gun safety advocates. Speakers at the rally included survivors of gun violence as well as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, Senators Chris Murphy, Richard Blumenthal, and Alex Padilla, as well as Rep. Lucy McBath, Rep. Mike Thompson, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, and Mayor Muriel Bowser. A recording of the event is available here.
“There’s a groundswell of Americans rising up and sending a clear message to our Senators: don’t look away,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “Don’t look away from the gun violence that’s killing our children; don’t look away from the gun violence that’s killing 110 people every single day and wounding hundreds more. Now is the time to be bold and take action to save lives — because inaction is not an option.”
“Ending our gun violence epidemic will take more than thoughts and prayers — it will take action, and that’s exactly what a sea of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers were demanding of the Senate today,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Senators, don’t look away from the human cost of inaction on gun violence, which is growing steeper by the day.”
On Monday, Students Demand Action held a rally outside the Capitol with student volunteers wearing bulletproof vests, a powerful visual statement about what could soon become reality if the Senate fails to act. More information on that rally, including a photo and video, is available here.
