Among Other Things, Bills Would Create a Red Flag Law, Require Background Checks on All Gun Sales and Limit High-Capacity Magazines
With Today’s Signing, New Jersey Continues to Lead on Gun Safety
TRENTON, N.J. – Today the New Jersey chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, praised Governor Murphy for enacting gun violence prevention legislation in New Jersey. The legislation centered around six gun safety policies.
The bills signed today will expand New Jersey’s background check laws by requiring a point-of-sale check prior to all gun sales, adding additional safeguards to the state’s existing purchase permit system. The package of bills also includes a Red Flag law that would create an Extreme Risk Protective Order, a type of court order that can temporarily restrict a person’s access to firearms when they pose a risk of harming themselves or others and that can help prevent warning signs from turning into tragedies.
STATEMENT FROM BRETT SABO, VOLUNTEER LEADER WITH THE NEW JERSEY CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Gun-sense champion Governor Murphy ran a campaign focusing on preventing gun violence. He has upheld that promise. We could not be more proud to stand by his side today as he signs these crucial pieces of legislation into law.”
STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:
“This is what real leadership looks like. Governor Murphy made gun safety a top priority and took bold action – exactly what the people of New Jersey elected him to do.”
