Victory for Gun Sense: Delaware Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Governor Carney for Signing Red Flag Legislation

June 27, 2018

Delaware is the Sixth State to Enact Red Flag Legislation Following the School Shooting in Parkland

Red Flag Laws Can Help Prevent Firearm Suicides and Mass Shootings

DOVER, Del. – The Delaware chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, applauded Gov. John Carney for signing HB 222 into law. HB 222 is a Red Flag bill that will empower local law enforcement to work with families to seek a Lethal Violence Protection Order (LVPO). An LVPO is a court order that temporarily restricts a person’s access to firearms when they pose a risk of harming themselves or others. Family members and local law enforcement are often the first people to recognize warning signs for violence. This new law will give them the power to help prevent tragedies like mass shootings and gun suicides before they happen.

This legislation is immensely popular in Delaware. Recent polling conducted by SurveyUSA on behalf of Everytown showed an overwhelming 91 percent of Delawareans, including 81 percent of gun owners, support Red Flag legislation.

STATEMENT FROM SARAH STOWENS, VOLUNTEER LEADER WITH THE DELAWARE CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Today is a momentous occasion. This Red Flag bill signing demonstrates that Delaware continues to lead the way across the country on common sense gun policies. We could not be more proud of Gov. Carney and lawmakers in the First State for making a serious commitment to gun safety and taking a critical step toward protecting our communities from gun violence.”
