Delaware Becomes the 7th State to Prohibit Firearms in Polling Locations
Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action Volunteers Sent Over 2,000 Messages Supporting Gun Safety Legislation this Session
DOVER, Del. — The Delaware chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots network, released the following statement applauding Governor John Carney for signing HB 201 and HB 202. The measures will prohibit guns in schools except for military members and law enforcement acting in their official capacity and prohibit guns at polling places on election days.
“From the voting booth to the school playgrounds, Delaware families will be safer from gun violence” said Kristen Bruce, a volunteer with the Delaware chapter of Moms Demand Action. “These measures safeguard our democratic rights by ensuring that we can vote freely and protect our children’s learning spaces by fostering a safe environment free from guns. We applaud our gun sense champions for their unwavering leadership, and thank Governor Carney for signing these bills into law.”
In an average year in Delaware, 123 people die by guns and 51 percent of gun deaths are by firearm homicide. Gun violence costs Delaware $1.4 billion each year, of which $44.4 million is paid by taxpayers. More information on gun violence in Delaware is available here.
