Tomorrow, the Louisiana House will consider HB 281, a preemption bill that would eliminate the authority of local governments to prohibit the possession of firearms in certain businesses and public buildings, including establishments that serve alcohol and buildings where children play. Preemption laws undermine the ability of mayors and local police chiefs to keep their communities safe.
Current Louisiana law allows local governments to prohibit firearms in commercial establishments and public buildings, allowing them to tailor gun laws to meet local conditions. HB 281 would prohibit local officials from keeping guns out of public buildings where they have decided firearms are not appropriate.
Both New Orleans and Baton Rouge prohibit guns in buildings used for youth recreational activities. And New Orleans, recognizing the unique risks that firearms pose in a large city with a high density of businesses that serve alcohol, prohibits firearms on any premises where alcohol is sold and consumed. HB 281 would strip them of that authority.
Volunteers with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America are available for interviews ahead of the vote. More information on preemption laws is available here.
