This morning on the TODAY Show, volunteers with Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action sat down with NBC’s Joe Fryer to talk about the impact of active shooter drills.
The volunteers — and their children — shared stories about personal experiences with active shooter drills, and discussed recommendations on how to keep students safe in school. A video of the segment is below.
Last week, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, the National Education Association, and the American Federation of Teachers released a report on the effectiveness of active shooter drills. Among other findings, the report recommended schools refrain from conducting drills that are unannounced or simulate extreme gun violence, citing a lack of evidence that such drills are effective and overwhelming signs that they are harmful to students’ wellbeing. Instead, schools should focus on proactive school safety solutions, like secure firearm storage, increased mental health counseling, and physical security measures.
