Assembly Bill 846/Senate Bill 589 Would Allow Guns in K-12 Schools
MADISON, Wis. – Today, volunteers with the Wisconsin chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, will meet with lawmakers at the Wisconsin State Capitol to oppose Assembly Bill 846 and Senate Bill 589, which would allow guns in Wisconsin K-12 schools. The Assembly version of the bill was introduced earlier this month. If enacted, the bills would change Wisconsin law to allow people—including teachers and visitors—to bring loaded guns into K-12 schools.
The volunteers with the Wisconsin chapter of Moms Demand Action will be at the Capitol to thank the lawmakers who have worked to keep guns out of schools and to urge them to continue to oppose these bills. In addition to the in-person meetings, Moms are driving hundreds of calls to the Capitol each week to ensure lawmakers hear from Wisconsin constituents on this dangerous bill.
“Allowing people other than trained law enforcement and security officers to carry guns in schools is a reckless approach to school safety that puts our children in danger,” said Kelly Herda, volunteer with the Wisconsin chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Instead of fighting to allow guns in schools, Wisconsin lawmakers should focus on keeping guns out of dangerous hands. We know that teachers and law enforcement agree that allowing teachers and other civilians to carry guns in our schools is a dangerous idea. Moms applaud our Wisconsin lawmakers who have worked hard to keep guns out of our schools.”
Along with discussing guns in K-12 schools, Moms will speak with lawmakers about the need to oppose another dangerous bill, Senate Bill 363, which would overrule the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents and force colleges and universities to allow students, faculty, and visitors to carry loaded guns on campus grounds and inside campus buildings.
