Thursday in Lincoln: Lawmakers Have an Opportunity to Advance Life-Saving Gun Violence Prevention Legislation

February 26, 2019

On Thursday, members of the Judiciary Committee have an opportunity to advance bills that would protect Nebraska families by helping to keep guns away from individuals with dangerous histories and people displaying warning signs of harming themselves or others. Volunteers with the Nebraska chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America will gather at the statehouse to meet with lawmakers personally and testify in support of three life-saving bills:

  • LB 532, legislation that would protect women and children by helping to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.
  • LB 58, commonly known as a Red Flag bill, that would empower law enforcement and family members to seek a court order temporarily blocking a person from having guns if they are a danger to themselves or others.
  • LB 275, legislation that would strengthen the background check system by making sure state law enforcement officials are notified when a person prohibited from having guns tries to buy a firearm and fails a background check.

Volunteers will also urge lawmakers to reject two dangerous bills:

Lawmakers have a decision to make on Thursday: Advance common sense gun legislation that will save lives, or weaken public safety standards in Nebraska.

If you have any questions or would like to speak to a Moms Demand Action volunteer about this legislation, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
