GREENVILLE, Texas — The Texas chapters of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Students Demand Action, both a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statements after reports that at least two people were shot and killed and 12 more were wounded in Greenville, Texas. The shooting took place at a party venue where students from Texas A&M University-Commerce were celebrating homecoming.
“These students were not in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Ryan Short, a college student in Dallas and volunteer with Students Demand Action. “They were at a party that should have been perfectly safe. This is a devastating moment for Texas A&M Commerce and it’s terrifying for students across Texas, too. Until our lawmakers strengthen our gun laws, none of us are safe.”
“We’re holding the Texas A&M Commerce community close to our hearts after news of this shooting,” said Hilary Rand, a volunteer with the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Tragedies like this one are far too common here in Texas. We need our lawmakers to pass background check and red flag legislation, and we need them to stop catering to the gun lobby when so many lives are on the line.”
Today is also the one-year-mark of the mass shooting at the Tree of Life*Or L’Simcha Congregation in Pittsburgh that killed 11 worshipers and wounded six more.
