PONDER, Texas – The Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to reports of a mass shooting at a home in Ponder, a rural town north of Fort Worth, that killed six people. While local authorities have confirmed that there is no active shooter, they have not yet clarified if the suspect is among the dead.
Research by Everytown for Gun Safety shows that this is at least the 183rd mass shooting since January 2009, and the seventh mass shooting this year. Since January 2009, Texas has seen more mass shootings – 19 – than any other state in the country. Everytown defines mass shootings as those in which four or more people are shot and killed, excluding the shooter.
STATEMENT FROM KRISTY HILL, A FORT WORTH-BASED VOLUNTEER WITH THE TEXAS CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“My heart breaks for the friends and family of those killed this morning as well as the entire community impacted by this tragedy. We should be able to live our daily lives safe from the threat of gun violence, which is exactly why our elected leaders should do more to prevent senseless acts of gun violence like this one. As we mourn this loss, we must also act to prevent further gun violence.”
