Texas Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Fatal Shooting of Transgender Woman in Dallas

May 20, 2019

DALLAS, Texas — The Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to the death of a transgender woman in Dallas. According to reports, Muhlaysia Booker was found fatally shot in the morning of Saturday, May 18. In April, Muhlaysia was the victim of a videotaped attack that was investigated as a hate crime.

There have been at least four transgender people killed in the United States so far this year; all four of the victims were Black women shot and killed with a gun.

“I am heartbroken for the family and friends of Muhlaysia Booker,” said Hilary Whitfield, a volunteer with the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “We cannot tolerate this senseless violence that too often devastates the transgender community. We are mourning Muhlaysia, and we’ll remember her as we continue our work to prevent gun violence.”
