South Carolina Moms, Everytown Respond to Orangeburg County Shooting that Killed Four, Including Two Children

July 15, 2015

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement in response to a reported mass shooting that occurred on Wednesday morning in a Holly Hill home in which an unidentified gunman shot and killed four people and injured one other. The shooting victims include an adult male; Krystal Hutto, 28; Shamekia Sanders, 17; Tamara Perry, 14; and an 8-year-old boy who was shot and injured. According to police, the shooter has not yet been identified and is still at large.

This incident is one of at least 133 mass shootings that have occurred in America since 2009. A previously released report from Everytown for Gun Safety provides a comprehensive analysis of incidents in which four or more people were murdered with a gun, a widely-used definition of mass shootings from the FBI.

STATEMENT FROM CRAIG STINE, A VOLUNTEER LEADER FOR THE SOUTH CAROLINA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION:

“First and foremost, our thoughts are with the families of the victims and the 8-year-old boy who was injured. While the details are still unfolding, today’s tragic mass shooting took the lives of four people—including children—and injured another by a single act of gun violence. This incident is yet another reminder of our nation’s devastating toll of gun violence that kills 88 Americans everyday. It’s time we stand up for South Carolinians and work toward preventing shootings that cut short the lives of innocent children and residents across the state.”

This morning’s shooting follows last week’s deadly shooting that killed three at a York County home and the horrific mass shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church that killed nine innocent people in their place of worship nearly one month ago.
