CINCINNATI – The Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today issued the following statement in response to reports of a shooting in downtown Cincinnati that left four people dead, including the gunman. Two other people were wounded in the shooting.
STATEMENT FROM MICHELE MUELLER, VOLUNTEER LEADER WITH THE OHIO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“We’re horrified by today’s senseless shooting, and we’re keeping each of the affected families in our thoughts. It’s all too clear that we have to do more in Ohio to address the gun violence affecting communities across the state.”
Earlier this year, a committee of Republican and Democratic lawmakers recommended several additions to Ohio gun laws. The recommendations, which have the support of Gov. Kasich but have not been taken up by the legislature, include:
- Red Flag legislation, which would empower family members and law enforcement officers to seek an Extreme Risk Protection Order, a court order temporarily restricting a person’s access to guns when they pose a risk to self or others. Eight states enacted Red Flag laws this year in the wake of the Parkland tragedy, bringing the total number of states with these laws to 13. More information is available here about Red Flag laws.
- Legislation to help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. More than two dozen other states have taken action in recent years to protect women and families by enacting laws that help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. More information about how Ohio can join these states is available here.
