2014 Election Marks Evolution in Gun Politics: Candidates Ran on Gun Safety Records and Won, Proving the Polls Right – Pennsylvanians Support Gun Sense
Moms Demand Action and Everytown Mobilized More Than One Million Americans To Vote for Gun Sense Champions This November and Beyond
Endorsed by Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America and Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, Tom Wolf’s election is a victory for gun safety in Pennsylvania, said the Pennsylvania chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Governor Corbett’s loss comes days after he signed dangerous legislation pushed by the Washington gun lobby that allows the NRA to sue Pennsylvania towns and cities that have passed ordinances to protect their communities, while sticking taxpayers with the legal bill. Moms, alongside gun violence survivors and other gun safety advocates, mobilized over 37,000 gun sense voters in Pennsylvania who pledged to turn out and vote on this issue today and in future elections.
“This is a significant victory for moms and our families. In Pennsylvania and in races across the country yesterday, Americans supported policies and candidates that will prevent gun violence. In addition to Tom Wolf, the resounding victories for gun sense candidates nationwide sends a powerful and unmistakable message to lawmakers: You must act to protect moms and our families from gun violence.”
“Pennsylvania moms were tired of having a Governor who was in the pocket of the gun lobby and the silent legislators who supported dangerous bills that put our families’ at risk slide through our legislature far too often,” said Christine Licata, volunteer with the Pennsylvania chapter of Moms Demand Action. “This hit a nerve and moms mobilized across the state signing up tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians to take their concerns to the voting booth and we won! Tom Wolf is the type of leader Pennsylvania moms can count on to do the right thing when it comes to gun violence prevention.
“Now the real work begins. We’re going to roll up our sleeves and continue to go toe-to-toe with the gun lobby. The momentum is continuing forward and moms are in this for the long haul because gun violence prevention is vital to keeping our families safe,” continued Licata.
Moms and Everytown-endorsed candidates in Pennsylvania included U.S. Representatives Chaka Fattah, Pat Meehan and Mike Fitzpatrick and candidate Brendon Boyle; as well as Tom Wolf for Governor.
