PITTSBURGH – The Pennsylvania chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded to reports of a shooting at Penn State Beaver campus. Although details are still unfolding, reports suggest that there were up to 15 shots fired near the Student Union Building. Troopers said an employee at Penn State Beaver was shot near her car by her estranged husband who later shot and killed himself. The school chancellor announced that campus would remain on lockdown until further notice.
Everytown research shows there have been at least 62 school shootings nationwide this year and at least 268 since January 2013. More than 90 Americans are killed with guns every day on average, and hundreds more are injured. More information about gun violence in the U.S. is available here.
STATEMENT FROM JENNA PAULAT, VOLUNTEER WITH THE PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and the entire Penn State Beaver community. On the eve of the five-year-mark of the Sandy Hook mass shooting, we are reminded that we have more work to do to keep our school communities safe from senseless acts of gun violence. This is at least the 62nd school shooting in 2017 and the 270th since 2013. We do not have to live this way, and we refuse to accept these tragedies as our new normal. We have a duty to protect our children and neighbors, and ensure that our schools will remain safe havens for generations to come. The time to act is now.”
