Yesterday, volunteers with the Florida chapter of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action headed to Tallahassee to advocate for common-sense gun laws. At the chapter’s first advocacy day in 2015, there were three volunteers in attendance. This year, there were more than 400.
Among them were gun owners, veterans, doctors, teachers, and gun violence survivors, including survivors of the shooting at Pulse nightclub in 2016, the shooting at Parkland in 2018, and dozens of other shootings that never made the news.
Volunteers traveled to Tallahassee from Orlando, Tampa, Pensacola, Jacksonville, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and other communities all across the state. They spent the day meeting with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to advocate for stronger background checks laws — and specifically, for the passage of SB 7028, a bill which would require background checks on gun sales at gun shows and other places open to the public, among other provisions. The bill passed through the Senate Infrastructure and Security Committee with strong bipartisan support.
