SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, applauded Congressman Peter DeFazio’s public statements withdrawing his support for the SHARE Act, which includes the so-called “Hearing Protection Act” that would profit gun manufactures by gutting silencer safety laws and making it easy for people with dangerous histories to buy silencers without a background check.
In a statement on the House floor yesterday, Congressman DeFazio called on House Leadership to “formally withdraw their so called Sportsman’s Package, which has many objectionable provisions.”
The SHARE Act would gut long-standing safety laws designed to keep silencers out of the wrong hands. Specifically, it would remove silencers from the National Firearms Act, making it easy for convicted felons, domestic abusers and people with dangerous mental illnesses to buy silencers without passing a background check – simply by finding an unlicensed seller.
STATEMENT FROM PAUL KEMP, A MEMBER OF THE EVERYTOWN SURVIVOR NETWORK WHOSE BROTHER-IN-LAW WAS SHOT AND KILLED DURING THE CLACKAMAS TOWN CENTER SHOOTING:
“After my brother-in-law was shot and killed by a stranger in a senseless act of gun violence, I decided to speak out in his memory about how we can reduce gun violence in our state and across the country. As a gun owner and supporter of the Second Amendment, I know silencers distort the sound of a gun. The SHARE Act would make it easy for silencers to end up in the wrong hands. I can’t even imagine how much worse the Las Vegas shooting could have been if the gunman had used a silencer. I applaud Congressman DeFazio’s thoughtful reconsideration of the SHARE Act – a sham bill that would put profits ahead of public safety.”
