Oklahoma Moms Demand Action Respond to OK2A Statement on Tulsa Race Massacre

The Oklahoma chapter of Moms Demand Action, part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots networks, released the following statement in response to a statement issued by the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association (OK2A) regarding the Tulsa Race Massacre.

“Let’s get something straight: the Tulsa race massacre occurred because racists, enabled and armed by local officials, thought Black people were becoming too successful, so they killed us and burned our homes and businesses,” said JeKia Harrison, a volunteer leader with the Oklahoma chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Oklahoma has the 10th-highest rate of gun deaths in the U.S., and rather than distorting the past to push an extreme agenda, we should be looking for common ground to prevent shootings and make all of us safer.”

In an average year, 711 people die by guns in Oklahoma, and more than 1,400 are wounded. With a rate of 18.0 deaths per 100,000 people, Oklahoma has the 10th-highest rate of gun deaths in the US.
