COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded after the Ohio Senate passed a revised version of House Bill 228, a gun bill that would roll back Ohio public safety laws. Facing widespread opposition, lawmakers removed the bill’s “Stand Your Ground” provision and language that would encourage people to carry hidden, loaded handguns in public without a permit or firearm safety training by removing the threat of serious punishment.
The bill continues to contain language that would allow out-of-state special interest groups to sue Ohio cities and towns for attempting to enact or enforce local solutions to gun violence.
“On Tuesday night, senators listened for hours as Ohio law enforcement leaders, concerned parents and other constituents shared our opposition to this dangerous legislation,” said Sarah Mouncey, volunteer leader with the Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “By taking out two of the most reckless portions of this bill, senators showed they heard our voices. But even in its amended form, this bill would let out-of-state special interests sue Ohio cities and towns for working to prevent gun violence. The way to make Ohio safer is to pass bipartisan gun safety legislation like a Red Flag law, and this bill would still take us in the exact opposite direction.”
