BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement after the North Dakota House of Representatives passed legislation that would allow schools to arm teachers and other school staff. The bill, House Bill 1332, now moves to the North Dakota Senate.
“We all want our kids to be safe in schools, but arming teachers isn’t an effective way to protect them,” said Cheryl Biller, volunteer chapter leader with the North Dakota chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “This is something that has been tried and studied, and rather than make students and teachers safer, it brings new risks into the classroom. This would make North Dakota schools less safe, and the Senate should reject it.”
More information about the risks of arming teachers, as well as proven strategies for improving school safety, are available in a new report from Everytown, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association.
