New NRA “Fx” Grade Backfires as Candidates Embrace New NRA Rating for Everytown-Endorsed Candidates

October 15, 2018

Last week, the NRA began awarding a new letter grade, “Fx,” for candidates who have been supported by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America or received an endorsement from the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund. Almost immediately, the new letter grade has become a badge of honor.

Candidates from the Sunshine State, including Ted Deutch, Donna E. Shalala, Cindy Polo, Chintan Desai, and Anna V. Eskamani are proudly displaying their “Fx” grade. Even Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom in California is asking for his upgrade.

As Everytown for Gun Safety President John Feinblatt told the New York Daily News, “If there was ever any doubt that Everytown was the counterweight to the NRA, I think this proves it once and for all.” These candidates and lawmakers recognize gun safety will play a crucial role in the midterm elections this November and an “Fx” grade shows they’re willing to stand up to the NRA’s dangerous agenda.

Candidates aren’t just embracing their “F” and “Fx” ratings either. As the Daily Beast reports this morning, on the other side “the NRA’s A-rating [has lost] its luster for Republican candidates,” too. Candidates who once touted their NRA-bonafides can’t run further from being associated with the gun lobby.

This new grade comes after more than 3,000 candidates have earned the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Distinction for pledging to fight gun violence with common-sense gun laws. Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund has already committed to spending more than $20 million this cycle supporting candidates and getting out the vote for gun safety, and committed to spending $2 million in Florida, where the NRA “Fx” grade originated. Over the weekend, hundreds of events took place across the country during the second Weekend of Action where volunteers with Moms Demand Action rallied, knocked doors and phonebanked for these gun sense champions.
