New Mexico Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Shooting on the Navajo Nation

November 15, 2018

FBI Reports the Shooter Shot and Killed Three People and Wounded One in Apparent Murder-Suicide

NAVAJO NATION, N.M. – The New Mexico chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to the shooting in Tsayatoh on the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico. The shooting, which left three people dead, excluding the shooter, and one woman wounded, appears to be an act of domestic violence, authorities report.

Research by Everytown for Gun Safety shows that a majority of fatal domestic violence is committed with firearms. These occurrences disproportionately affect women, who are 16 times more likely to be killed with guns in the U.S. than in other high-income countries.

STATEMENT FROM CHERYL HAASE, VOLUNTEER LEADER WITH THE NEW MEXICO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“I am mourning this tragic incident and my heart is with the families of those killed and wounded. We must do more to protect families from gun violence. Yesterday, we saw what can happen if we don’t take better steps to keep our communities safe.”
