Following Annual Moms Demand Action Advocacy Day, Governor Lujan Grisham Endorsed Further Action on Gun Violence Prevention Measures .
SANTA FE — New Mexico Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots network, released the following statement after lawmakers in both chambers advanced key measures in the fight against gun violence and closed the legislative session with key wins for gun safety.
“This week is a testament to the work on the ground and behind the scenes from our grassroots army and gun sense lawmakers,” said Regina Griego, a volunteer with the New Mexico Chapter of Moms Demand Action. “We thank our representatives and senators, as well as Governor Lujan Grisham for getting the child access prevention bill across the finish line and not letting their foot off the gas. We look forward to continuing partnering with our gun sense leaders to build on this progress and protect all New Mexico families from gun violence.”
The life-saving measures that saw progress this week include:
- SIGNED: HB-9 – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham alongside Moms Demand Action volunteers signed legislation to implement Child Access Prevention (CAP) measures that seek to prevent children from getting access to firearms by requiring secure firearm storage practices, promoting responsible gun ownership and preventing unauthorized persons from getting access to a gun.
- HEADING TO THE GOVERNOR: SB 19 – The legislature passed legislation regarding law enforcement training and use of force procedures that include outlawing firing into a moving vehicle, and standardized training of all enforcement officers.
- HEADING TO THE GOVERNOR: HB 306 – The legislature passed legislation to prohibit unlawful purchases of firearms from another individual without an adequate background check.
As we look forward to the next legislative session, Governor Lujan Grisham has publicly stated that she wishes to see other gun violence prevention measures be a focus of the legislative session in 2024. Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers look forward to working with her office to ensure these common-sense gun safety policies take center stage to make New Mexico a leader in the fight against gun violence.
