TRENTON, N.J. – The New Jersey chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, praised Governor Murphy for signing an executive action that will help fight illegal gun trafficking by improving access to data about guns used to commit crimes. Comprehensive crime gun trace data can detect the sources of illegal firearms recovered by law enforcement, track the movement of guns used in crimes and inform law enforcement and the public about gun violence and firearms trafficking patterns. This information is vital to fighting gun trafficking and keeping New Jersey communities safe.
A successful firearms trace will identify the first retail purchaser of the firearm. This individual or entity may be the perpetrator of the crime, or may be otherwise relevant to the case. Not only can a firearm trace be useful to solve a specific investigation, it may also be help identify patterns in gun trafficking between states.
