This past weekend, gun violence survivors and volunteers with Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, the grassroots arms of Everytown for Gun Safety, held their second Weekend of Action in advance of the 2024 election. Over the course of the weekend, volunteers participated in more than 320 voter contact events, including canvassing, phone and text banking and postcard writing. Events were held in 46 states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, and Nevada. Moms Demand Action executive director, Angela Ferrell-Zabala, canvassed with volunteers in North Carolina and Tennessee, and volunteers in Pennsylvania knocked doors on behalf of Moms Demand Action volunteers-turned-candidates and other Gun Sense Candidates alongside Governors Shapiro (PA), Whitmer (MI), and Evers (WI). Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers will continue to get out the vote on behalf of Gun Sense Candidates until election day.
When Moms Demand Action was founded in 2012, more than one third of Congressional Democrats had an NRA A-grade. Thanks to the tireless advocacy of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers and gun violence survivors, a growing number of Republican candidates are not even seeking the NRA’s endorsement. Instead, candidates up and down the ballot are running on their gun safety credentials, because they know the majority of voters are with them. Already this cycle, more than 7,000 candidates have sought and received the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. This distinction lets voters know these candidates will govern with gun safety in mind if elected into office. The distinction is being used by candidates in their campaign materials. Additionally, gun safety volunteers and survivors of gun violence are going from advocating for gun safety to running for office themselves. Everytown Victory Fund has invested $7.5 million this election cycle to train volunteers to run for offices and join campaigns up and down the ballot through its Demand A Seat program. And so far this cycle, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund has endorsed over 650 candidates, including more than 500 volunteers.
