The North Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to reports of a shooting in Moncure that left six people dead yesterday:
“We are incredibly saddened by the news of yet another shooting connected to intimate partner violence,” said Claire Kempner, a volunteer with North Carolina Moms Demand Action. “Just the presence of a gun makes it five times more likely that an abuser will kill their victim, and far too many mass shootings begin as domestic violence situations. This is an urgent problem that must be addressed with common-sense gun laws to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.”
Research by Everytown for Gun Safety shows that this is at least the 228th mass shooting since January 2009. Every day in the U.S. on average, more than 100 people are killed with guns, and hundreds more are wounded – the majority of which do not take place during mass shootings.
Everytown defines mass shootings as those in which four or more people are shot and killed, excluding the shooter. An analysis of mass shootings from 2009 to 2018 shows there were a total of 194 mass shootings, which left 1,121 people dead and an additional 836 people wounded. In more than half of mass shootings over the past decade, the perpetrator shot a current or former intimate partner or family member as part of the rampage.
