Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (and Texas, too)

February 28, 2013

The loudest voices in the gun control debate in Texas may belong to those who not only don’t want any controls at all, but want to get more guns in more hands, like state Rep. Jeff Leach of Plano, who has proposed a sales tax holiday for those wanting to make purchases. Steve Blow wrote a great column about this and other questionable gun proliferation efforts.

But there’s another group, formed in December by Shannon Watts, an Indiana mother of five, that also wants to make its voice heard in Texas and around the country. It’s Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, known up until Feb. 20 as One Million Moms For Gun Control. Modeled on Mothers Against Drunk Driving, it’s a nationwide movement formed in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Conn., with tens of thousands of members in more than 80 chapters across the United States including four in Texas: in Austin, Houston, San Antonio and, yes, Dallas. The Texas chapters represent about 600 active members and Hilary Whitfield, the Austin-based regional leader in Texas for Moms Demand Action, is determined to help those numbers grow.
