Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Reports That NRA Board Member Promoted Racist Theories

May 2, 2018

According to Mother Jones, NRA Board Member and Former President Sandra Froman Once Worked for Professor Who Claimed Black People Were Genetically Inferior

NEW YORK – Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded to news that Sandra Froman, a member of the NRA’s board, once worked for William Shockley, “an ardent eugenicist whose theories of black racial inferiority eventually made him an academic pariah,” according to the Southern Poverty Law Center via Mother Jones.

The NRA has a history of aligning itself with individuals with alarming views. Fellow board member Ted Nugent has an extensive history of race-fuelled remarks, and Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the NRA, has often used race-baiting tactics to incite fear, according to Salon.

Everytown and Moms Demand Action will have an active presence in Dallas during the NRA’s annual convention in Dallas from Thursday, May 3 to Sunday, May 6.

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“NRA leaders are not focused on defending the rights of everyday gun owners. As the marketing arm of gun manufacturers, the NRA uses every race-baiting tactic in the book to do one thing: sell more guns. An organization that elevates and celebrates people like Ted Nugent and Sandra Froman is not creating a culture of safety in America – it’s creating a culture war.”
