JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, criticized the Missouri House of Representatives for advancing HB 575, legislation that would allow colleges to arm faculty and force public colleges to allow people to carry concealed handguns on campus.
“There is no evidence that putting more guns on our campuses will make anyone safer,” said Becky Morgan, volunteer with the Missouri chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Arming our professors was bad enough to begin with, but an amendment to allow people to carry concealed handguns on campus is an insult to public safety. We implore our lawmakers to see sense and throw out this dangerous attempt to allow guns in places they don’t belong.”
Last week, Representative Jered Taylor amended HB 575 to force public institutions of higher education to allow people to carry hidden, loaded handguns on campus, making it significantly more dangerous for the campus community. The amendment is similar to HB 258, separate legislation sponsored by Rep. Taylor that was met with overwhelming opposition and stalled in the House.
