The Minnesota chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown’s grassroots networks, released the following statement on the official sentencing of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was found guilty in April on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd. Chauvin was today sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
“While today’s sentencing is an important step towards accountability, George Floyd should be alive today,” said Jessica DeWeerth, a volunteer with the Minnesota chapter of Moms Demand Action. “And there is still much work to do to bring long overdue changes to a racist system that continues to perpetuate police violence against Black people and far too often, prevent accountability. We stand with George’s family and community in fighting for lasting change.”
