The Minnesota chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown’s grassroots networks, released the following statement on the official sentencing of Kimberly Potter, the Brooklyn Center police officer who was found guilty on charges of first and second degree manslaughter in the killing of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man. Potter was sentenced today to two years in prison. State sentencing guidelines suggest a sentence between six and eight and a half years for the offense.
“While today’s sentencing attempts to provide some accountability, it falls short of what should have been done to truly hold Daunte Wright’s killer accountable,” said Deb Peterson, a volunteer with the Minnesota chapter of Moms Demand Action. “The justice system failed Daunte, who should still be alive today, and we will continue working alongside the community to bring long overdue changes to a racist system that continues to allow violence against Black people.”
