Today: Senate Judiciary Hearing on Guns in Schools Bill, S 442
Moms, Teachers, Retired Law Enforcement Testify in Opposition to Allowing Guns in K-12 Schools and College Dorms and Classrooms
LANSING, Mich. — Members of the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, joined with teachers, parents, retired law enforcement, and other supporters at the State Capitol today for the Senate Judiciary committee hearing to testify in opposition to S 442, a “guns everywhere” bill that would allow concealed carry of handguns in K-12 schools, day care centers, sports arenas, bars, places of worship, certain entertainment facilities, hospitals, and college dorms and classrooms. The Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action released the statement below from Kristen Moore, volunteer chapter leader with the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action, urging Michigan lawmakers to vote “no” on S 442.
“My kids have a right to feel safe at school, and so do their teachers. Since Sandy Hook, there have been at least 150 school shootings in America—allowing hidden, loaded, handguns into K-12 schools and into our college dorms and classrooms only advances the gun lobby’s goal of putting more guns in more places, yet does nothing to actually keep our schools safe from gun violence. I urge our lawmakers in Lansing to listen to voices of their constituents to vote ‘no’ on this dangerous bill.”
